Mountain West Standings

Watching BYU and New Mexico battle things out for the regular season title will be great. UNLV and San Diego State are in a deadlock for third place.

The Cowboys are trying to avoid the "pigtail" game of the Mountain West tourney but looks like they will end up there are losing to TCU on Saturday.

BYU loses to UNLV on the road while New Mexico knocks San Diego State in OT. The top of the Mountain West is starting to get complicated as BYU no longer looks invincible. The Lobos seem to have things figured out while UNLV is picking up their game when it matters most.

Mountain West Standings for 2/1/10. The four teams of BYU, New Mexico, UNLV and San Diego State are finally starting to seperate themselves from the rest of the pack. Over the next month it will be a battle to see which teams can position themselves for a spot in the NCAA Tourney. BYU and New Mexico are solid projections right now. Can the Rebels or Aztecs impress the voters over the next six weeks to earn a tourney spot?

SDSU, UNLV and CSU would be all be likely to end up in the NIT if they don't make the NCAA tournament.

BYU showed they are still one of the top teams in the country with their road win over San Diego State. New Mexico is back on track after a couple weeks of struggles. This week Wyoming faces Utah and Air Force. A split is likely since it could be tough to knock off Utah. If the Pokes lose to Air Force then the rest of the season could be really ugly without Muojeke.

Updated standings after San Diego State knocked off Utah on the road 70-68. BYU is great and Air Force is bad. For the most part teams 2-8 are all dangerous. Only 4 or 4 games in to the conference schedule makes it a little hard to see how all the teams match up. Quite a few upsets so far this season. Too many losses could prevent the Mountain West from getting three or even four teams into the NCAA tournament.

Deep Thoughts: CSU leads the conference at 2-0 but lets see how they do against BYU, UNLV and New Mexico in the next week. BYU has only a single loss but can they keep it up without their leading Jimmer Fredette who is out with mono.

Very interested to see how Wyoming does against TCU on the road tonight. If the Pokes put together a solid effort for 40 minutes they can be really dangerous down the stretch. We've seen what they can do for one half on multiple occasions.

The Pokes did beat San Diego State last night but that was without their leading scorer. The Aztecs have also beaten much better opponents this year. Utah is an interesting team this year. The Utes have struggled at times but also beaten some quality opponents. Since we're still only two games into the conference schedule there is still a lot to learn about each team.

We'll see where the Pokes go after this great win on Saturday. Perhaps they have turned a leaf and the presence of Boeudo and improvements of Lester and Muojeke can take them to the next level.
